“People are afraid of things they don’t understand” (p. 76).  This theme is developed throughout the novel, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, as judgments are made about people without cause.  Choose at least two examples that illustrate this point, and develop them completely in an organized essay.  Be sure to include specific evidence from the novel for support.

GUIDELINES:

  1. Your essay should include a minimum of four paragraphs – an introduction, two supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion.
  2. Each supporting paragraph should be based on a specific example from the novel.
  3. Introductory and closing paragraphs should have a minimum of five sentences; supporting paragraphs should have a minimum of seven.
  4. Remember to keep all verbs in the same tense – present or past tense NOT BOTH.
  5. Do not refer to yourself in your essay (no “I”, “I think”, “I believe”, etc.).  Also refrain from using the pronoun “you”.
  6. Do not use phrases such as, “A first supporting detail is…”; “Here are examples…”; or “That was an example of…”.
  7. Be sure each paragraph has a strong and clear topic sentence and a closing sentence that refers back to your thesis statement / claim.
  8. PROOFREAD carefully and thoroughly.
  9. MLA heading. Name, block, assignment and due date (day/month/year) in the top lefthand corner.
  10. If you type your essay, it MUST be double-spaced (no extra spaces between paragraphs).  Use a standard font and black ink.  If handwritten, use blue or black ink, and do not skip any lines.  Do not write/print on the back side of the paper.
  11. All drafting must be submitted with the essay.

*If you do not follow directions, your essay will not be considered on time!  The essay is due on  Tuesday, March, 29th.  A paper copy of your essay should be in hand on the due date – no emailing/printing in school.  Grades will be lowered a full letter grade for each day the report is late.

Ladies, please wear a dress, skirt, or dress pants with a top or sweater.
Gentlemen, please wear khakis or dress pants with a shirt and tie, button down shirt, or polo shirt.
If you do not have any of these items, please use your best judgment when selecting what to wear.
